Continued Professional Development - Requirements Each Year

30 hours Continued Professional Development CPD) per annum - 1 hour = 1 point

Please note that the education provider may specify points for the completion of their activity.
For NZAMH CPD purposes you will need to record the duration of active learning only.
Choose the CPD areas you want to do from the choices below to make up your 30 hours. 

How to achieve the 30 hours:
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN HERBAL MEDICINE, NATUROPATHY OR MEDICAL SCIENCE - Minimum 20 hours/ points per annum
  • OTHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Maximum 10 hours (points) per year 

First Aid Certificate

YOU WILL REQUIRE AN UP TO DATE FIRST AID CERTIFICATE

First Aid is crucial for your practice.
Your First Aid certificate (6400, 6401, 6402) needs to be current and must be submitted with your CPD material. 

First Aid Providers include:

Directed Learning Unlimited hrs per year

DIRECTED LEARNING
  • Attending, online or in person, an educational event in Western Herbal medicine or Naturopathy or Medical Sciences such as a professional workshop, seminar, conference, webinar or summit. (Only the active learning time is recorded as CPD hours/ points)
  • This may include formal post-graduate evidence-based study from an NZAMH accredited tertiary institution or an education provider approved for CPD e.g. an approved course in Rongoa medicine, ‘TASHM’ with Isla Burgess or a Health Science NZQA approved tertiary course.
  • Education may be delivered by commercial organisations whose primary income is through the sale of therapeutic products/services. If you are unsure of the credibility of an education provider please check with the NZAMH Administrator or the Education subcommittee.
  • Online learning must be of appropriate standard and you must be able to show evidence of completion.

Mentoring/Mentee Max 10 hrs per year

MENTORING/MENTEE

Paid or unpaid professional mentoring, unless this is a mandatory membership requirement.

Max 10 hours per year

The definition of mentoring is 'the act or process of helping and guiding another person to support their personal development.

The main purpose of mentoring is to share with a mentee information about his or her own career path, as well as provide guidance, motivation, emotional support, and role modelling. A mentor may help with exploring careers, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources.

It is a wonderful act to support and help new Medical Herbalists as they find their way and a great way to get CPD points.

Why not volunteer and help grow and develop herbal medicine across New Zealand.

NZAMH Branch Meetings Max 6 hrs per year

NZAMH BRANCH MEETINGS
There are different NZAMH Branch groups who meet around New Zealand. 
This is an area that NZAMH is looking to build on. If you participate in these groups you can get some CPD points. 
  • Attendance or participation in Peer Group Meetings with other health professionals/colleagues for clinical case discussions.
  • This does not include meetings with company representatives.
  • Max 6 hours per year

Herbal Hub Contribution Max 2 hrs per year


HERBAL HUB

The Herbal Hub Facebook page is a great place to keep herbal conversations alive and connect with your peers.
Why not contribute scientific articles, case studies and education opportunities for your fellow Medical Herbalists and get CPD points.

  • Active participation in the Herbal Hub forum including posting links of interest to members - Max 2 hours per year
  • Reviewing and posting a current online seminar or webinar for members - Additional 1 hour per review

Professional Writing Unlimited hrs per year

individual assessment required

Sharing your knowledge is a wonderful way to build the Medical Herbalist profession. It is so a great way to gain hours for your CPD. 

  • Publishing of health-related referenced articles, research, thesis or book. Publications may include peer-reviewed professional and industry journals, including Avena. It may also include Government submissions related to herbal materia medica, or newsletters, general media, magazines and websites if of appropriate standard.
  • Unlimited hours, individual assessment required

Self Directed Learning Max 6 hrs per year

Self Directed Learning is a wonderful way to build the Medical Herbalist community and get CPD points. Why not do some of these?

  • Write reviews of textbooks and reference materials for medical herbalists/naturopaths.
  • Create summaries of peer-reviewed articles published in professional journals (Australian Journal of Herbal and Naturopathic Medicine; Journal of Herbal Medicine; Journal of Ethnopharmacology).
  • Reviews and summaries published in Avena, Herbal Hub or NZAMH e-newsletter or added to your CPD Folder.
  • CPD questionnaires from Australian Journal of Herbal and Naturopathic Medicine (4 hours per issue)
  • Max 6 hours per year

Volunteer in a Herbal Shop/Garden Max 12 hrs per year

VOLUNTEER IN A HERBAL SHOP OR GARDEN

New Zealand is full of volunteers - People who give up their time to support their local community. Watch someones face when you offer to help them. It is so joyous to give back to others and you can get CPD points while you do it!

  • Volunteer work to gain experience, develop skills and provide community education. This does not include paid work.
  • Max 12 hours per year

Presenting to a professional audience Unlimited hrs per year

Why not present?
With planning and practise talking about health related research can be done.

  • Health-related research presented at conferences, seminars and workshops (includes papers for publication, poster presentations). e.g. 1-hour presenting + 3 hours preparation = 4 hours
  • Unlimited hours 

Presenting to a public audience Max 14 hrs per year

PRESENT TO THE PUBLIC

The public need your help and your knowledge!
Present to a public audience and get 4 CPD points!

  • A health-related topic presented to the public (or non-health related audience) e.g. 1-hour presenting + 3 hours preparation = 4 hours
  • Max 14 hours per year

 Academic Lecturing & Clinical Supervision Max 14 hrs per year

How do you feel about supporting the next generation of herbalists?

  • Teach tertiary, other government or NZAMH CPD approved health-related courses and gain some CPD points for yourself!
  • Max 14 hours per year

Other Professional Development Max 10 hrs per year

DIRECTED LEARNING:
  • Attending, online or in person, courses/seminars on other health care modalities e.g.reflexology, body work, general health care philosophy, ethics, history and health promotion
  • 10 hours per year

CLINICAL PRACTICE & BUSINESS RELATED:
  • Attending business-related seminars (IT skills, marketing, accounting, web development, social media development) and/or profession related self-development seminars.
  • Research on issues pertaining to clinical practice such as adverse events reporting, undertaking a clinical audit, permitted advertising, privacy legislation, new standards that affect the profession, ethics in practice, regulatory matters, patient confidentiality, dealing with complaints
  • 10 hours per year

Other Professional Development Max 10 hrs per year

NZAMH COMMITTEE & VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES:
  • Committee members and others doing voluntary work for NZAMH as requested by sub-committees e.g. college open days, graduate award review, discussion panels, policy documents. This includes Government submissions related to the recognition of herbal medicine as a profession.
  • 10 points per year
NZAMH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING:
  • In-person or virtual attendance
  • 2 hours per year

Submitting Your CPD Evidence

To keep your membership current, you have to provide evidence of what CPD you have done.  If you have any queries please get in touch with the NZAMH administrator via cpd@nzamh.org.nz

The evidence you are required to submit depends on what you have done. They can include:

  • Certificates of completion from the education provider specifying the number of hours of active learning (not the points ascertained by the provider). A photo or scanned document may be uploaded, or a screenshot of the webinar while attending (e.g. of Summit attendance)
  • If no evidence of completion or attendance is provided by the education facility then members can use a ‘review process' whereby the attendee must answer the question: What were your main learnings from this webinar? (Add your review to Evidence in your CPD Folder).
  • Transcripts of written material for publications etc.
  • Written record/diary of Mentoring/ Mentee activities including date/s and content covered during sessions.
  • Online webinars/presentations: Screenshot of access to the course or course presentation, ‘thank you for attending’ emails, receipt of payment etc. If no evidence is available, follow the review process to gain points.
  • Presentations: ‘Thank you’ letters or a confirmation of attendance or presentation. If no evidence is available, follow the review process to gain points.
  • Teaching confirmation of appointment and/or teaching schedule.
  • CPD logbook or diary for self-directed learning.
  • Clinical research activities: References, bibliography or links to newsletters, Professional Journal articles or ARONAH guides.
  • NZAMH Branch or Peer Group Meeting records of attendees, duration and content. This can be in the form of a sign-in sheet with the presenter at the top and the attendees signed in.
  • NZAMH committee: attendance at meetings (minutes showing attendee names) or estimate of hours and record of completing tasks.
  • Copy of completed NHAA AJHNM CPD.
  • Volunteer work: Letter from the supervisor of a shop/garden stating the number of voluntary hours worked.
  • Business studies, IT skills and marketing: provide copies/screenshots/photos of planning documents or work undertaken.
